One Night in Bangkok – Too Cliche?

I’ve been reading Lonely Planet’s most recent travel guide for Thailand, in hopes to creating some type of a top 10 list for places to see over the next year or so. Apparently that is an impossible task. So I thought I would go a different route: I fly in to Bangkok and have 24 hours before we bus down to Hua Hin, so I thought

I’d pick a few priorities to try and see that first day. This is what I have so far:

• Eat at least 10 different meals
• Wander Khao San Road and make friends
• See Wat Pho and the Emerald Buddha
• Visit the floating markets
• Explore and eat through Chinatown
• Enjoy at least one Thai massage (my friend in Thailand has been having some kind of addiction where she goes multiple times a day)
• Gulp a bucket of something while people watching the day away

My apologies if you didn’t pick up the sarcasm in the previous sentence, how am I supposed to do all of these things in one day?!

I just want to experience every single inch of Thailand, starting the minute I land in Bangkok, but I know I need to pace myself in order to truly value this experience. Reading through the guidebook, not just about places to see, but about the history of the country, the politics, and the culture, has again reminded me to be aware of the world outside of myself. There is so much to see, learn, and soak up, and I want to make the most of this opportunity.

 Two weeks from today the adventure begins. In the meantime, you can find me reading The Beach and packing my backpack.
